We left Umatilla fairly early and leaving town we went under the interstate prior to getting on the bike path across the bridge.

There were a few clouds in the sky but not nearly enough to temper the temperature for later in the day.

Sometimes I'm able to snap the picture of the Welcome sign and this morning was one of those times.

Just across the river the landscape was still fairly lush from the river inlets.

Several little islands sat out in the river on the Washington side.

Once we were on the Hwy 14 we saw several apple orchards. Prior to that there were alfalfa and wheat fields and a field filled with burlap bags and workers harvesting potatoes.

These apple trees were trellised on a slant.

The Oregon bank looked quite lush at this point -- farther away from the river both sides were deserts.

I didn't photos of Canoe Ridge Winery or of the Crow Butte State Park, a closed facility where we had counted on getting water.

Both the Oregon and Washington side went from flat desert to hilly desert. This is just across the river from Roosevelt where we were hoping there would be a store or restaurant open.

John and his truck took us the second fifty miles to The Dalles, OR. He very much reminded me of Doug Simon, tall, lanky, nice personality and winning smile.

These building were behind the Shiloh Inn and were identified as being church buildings. We never did find out which church or when they were a church.

Behind the church and the Shiloh was The Dalles Dam.

The Dalles was named for the effect of the flat flagstone that created the rapids in this area. The rapids as well as the Celilo Falls are now all covered by the lake behind the dam.
