There was a death in Paducah today. Our computer died, so we are sitting at the Kinko's in St Louis updating some of our journals. We are sorry for not writing, but we had no choice. We will update again in Kansas City, and should have the computer back a few days after that. The journals will be a bit briefer than usuall, so that we can get the information to you.

There were no mechanical problems today as we made our way from Henderson to Paducah, KY. The Team is fine, but we a had a hard day. Sometimes it is that way when you try to meet goals and maintain a schedule. However, we are very happy about our progress.

We took KY 60 all the way to Paducah. It is a two-lane road with no shoulder, but that didn't give us any problems. The drivers tended to be reticent, and held back. They gave us plenty of room.

As we enter the western end of Kentucky, we make the observation that the state is very poor on both ends with a lot of prosperity in the middle. It is still beautiful country, but you have to wonder about the attitudes of the people who live out here.

We established a new policy today. We have run into several situations where we stop for water and snacks, and after we have paid, they tell us they have no public restrooms. Our solution - we go out behind the building and use that facility. Not too cool, but satisfying in more ways than one.

The weather started very nice today, but soon became overcast. The winds were very heavy all day, and they were mostly of the hurting side wide type. For a while we had a direct head wind, and that tested our fortitude. Rain threatened all day, so we were in rain gear, and that was a pain.

We climber nearly 4,000 feet today, so with the wind, it was tough. We had fun, however, and will be off to the north tomorrow.

A special thanks to Steve for helping me with my computer while we were in Paducah. Even though we're able to update the journal at Kinko's, the phootos will be forthcoming but probably not until we reach Council Bluffs. Right now Sean at MacNetworks is installing a new hard drive in my computer and Bill will be bringing it with him when he comes to Iowa to see me!!!
