May 11, 2003

This will be short, as this is our first day, and we really haven't done anything! I will let you know that generally I will do these journals in a format that will have some discussion about the bike, some comments about how the two of us are doing and cover our day.

For today, the bike is still in the shop in College Park, MD awaiting our arrival. We have the disc brake rotor with us, so it won't be finished until after we arrive.

We are doing okay. There is a bit of jet lag, we are tired from a short night - neither of us slept very well because of the excitement of the trip, and we are still a bit disoriented from all that is going. This is all expected, so we will be fine.

We had an uneventful flight from SFO to Washington Dulles. We arrived right on time, but apparently after the Holiday Inn shuttle driver decided to quit for the night - he was supposed to be around until 1:00 am. We ended up using a cab driven by a Middle Eastern driver who was slightly miffed by having to take us on a $10 ride when he could have earned $40 for a trip to the city. Obviously, this was the luck of the draw, so we weren't too concerned.

When we reached the hotel, we learned that there was nothing open where we could get food. As we were discussing this with the desk person, a room service guy went by. I talked to him, and he assured me that everything, including room service, was closed. He then said that maybe he could make us a pizza. Money seems to take care of most things!

After I hauled our two boxes up the stairs and practically back to Dulles, we sat on the floor and had our pizza. It might have been the best we've ever had - we were so hungry.

This was a good first day, and we both are happy to be on our way.
